Governors play an important role at St Andrew’s CE. The school is part of the Watergrove Multi-Academy Trust and it is independent of the local authority. The Trust is responsible for four local schools: Wardle Academy, St Andrew’s C E Primary School & Nursery, St James C E Primary and Kentmere Academy.
Overall responsibility for the governance of the school lay with the Board of Trustees.
The school’s governors form the Academy Committee, which meets 6 times a year. A separate Ethos committee has oversight of the school’s Christian Distinctiveness.
What governors do?
The governing board provides strategic leadership and accountability in schools. It has three key functions:
● Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
● Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
● Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
Governors set the aims and objectives for the school and set the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the headteacher. In action, this means:
● Appointing and performance reviewing the head teacher and senior leaders, including making decisions about pay
● Managing budgets and deciding how money is spent
● Engaging with pupils, staff, parents and the school community
● Sitting on panels and making decisions about things like pupil exclusions and staff disciplinary
● Addressing a range of education issues within the school including disadvantaged pupils, pupils with special needs, staff workload and teacher recruitment
● Looking at data and evidence to ask questions and have challenging conversations about the school
Governors must be prepared to adopt the Nolan principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. Governors are also be committed to their role and to young people; confident in having courageous conversations; curious with an enquiring mind; able to challenge the status quo to improve things; collaborative to build strong relationships; critical to improve their own work and that of the board; and creative in problem solving and being innovative.
The Governing Body consists of 10 members appointed or elected by various bodies and groups including one member appointed by the Local Authority, five members elected by parents of the children at school, three Foundation Governors, one teacher governor, one non-teaching staff governor, two governors co-opted from the community and the Head Teacher.The full Academy Committee meets twice a term. The governors work with the Head Teacher, staff and parents to ensure that the children receive the best education possible within a happy, secure environment.
- The general conduct of the school
- Discipline – in consultation with the Head Teacher
- Overseeing the way the curriculum is taught in school.
- Making decisions about particular aspects of the curriculum such as sex education
- Deciding how the money allocated by the LA to run the school is spent
- Interviewing and appointing members of staff
- Making information available to parents

“Gary is a retired senior leader in secondary education having been professionally involved with the education and development of young people all his working life. He has been a governor at St Andrew’s school for over 30 years and took on the role of Chair after retiring. He is also Chair of Pennine District Scouts Executive. He believes strongly in providing children with a broad and rich curriculum which provides them with opportunities to achieve their true potential. Gary has a particular interest in music and sport and he is one of two diocesan appointed trustees on the Wardle Trust and also sits on the Manchester Diocesan Board of Education.”

“I became a Governor as representative for St Andrews Church in 1978, after election to Rochdale Council in 1982 I was appointed the Councils Governor and have remained a member to date.Much has changed over the years the school has gone from strength to strength and is an integral part of our local community. School has doubled in size, but always ensured that our pupils are central to all that is done, always in a safe, calm and caring environment. The establishment of the Nursery is something of which I am most proud I especially enjoy working with the School in dealing with issues relating to the Council.”

“I started as a Volunteer helping in Year 6. My Governance commenced February 2012. I continued to be a proactive Governor supporting Year 6. I am currently supporting Year 2 classes and nursery. I support Reverend Rachel with visits to Church by various classes for “Experiencing” Adventand Easter. My role is supporting St Andrew’s C. E. primary school and St Andrew’s Church in maintaining the strong links. I support Parent’s evenings and Parents Focus Group.”

“I have been involved with St Andrew’s School since I took over as Warden at St Andrew’s Church in about 2006. My association with the Church dates back to my teens.I came to the school with no preconceived ideas of the place. My own son was at University, and he had been a pupil at St James’ Wardle. I was instantly charmed by the school - its character, the infectious warmth, the joy therein.Time as a Governor has introduced me to many new opportunities - participating in debate and meetings, and given me a deeper insight into Education, way removed from the way it was in my Childhood - a life enriching experience.”

As well as being a trustee of the trust, I have been a governor at North Chadderton Academy for almost 20 years, a role which has given me valuable insight into the academy process, requirements and benefits.”
Reverend Rachel Battershell
“I was ordained at Manchester Cathedral in June 2011 and spent my Curacy in two small parishes in Oldham and then worked as a Team Vicar in a Parish in Ashton under Lyne. I became the Vicar of the Benefice of Dearnley, Wardle and Smallbridge, which includes St Andrew’s Church, Dearnley and Wardle Village Church in May 2017. Before ordination, I worked as a nurse in a variety of settings; hospital wards, nursing homes, building sites and factories. The last 10 years of my nursing career, I worked in the field of Occupational Health, working in food factories, car manufacture and finally at the University of Salford where I looked after the staff of the university as well as students on health care courses. I have enjoyed my interaction with the five schools in the area with many assemblies and visits to Church over the year. I am a Member of the Board of Watergrove Trust following the two Church schools joining the trust in September 2017. Being a Member of the board enables me to maintain the Christian ethos of St James’ and St Andrew’s schools. But this role also involves working with the other Members and Trustees to provide excellent teaching and outcomes for our Children both in primary and secondary levels. I look forward to the challenges ahead in the Church, Community and at the Trust.”

In school, I am the Inclusion Manager and work closely with the Senior Leadership Team. “My name is Sam Stericker and I am the support staff governor at St Andrew’s CE Primary School. I have been a teaching assistant at St Andrew’s for over 10 years, working mainly with Upper Key Stage 2, with a responsibility for children receiving the Pupil Premium funding. I feel it a privilege to have been part of a team that has seen positive changes whilst maintaining our school’s unique ethos.”

“My name is Amir Khan and I became a parent governor from June 2009 taking on the role in setting aims, objectives and policies to help achieve strategic leadership and accountability in St Andrew’s primary school. I have over 20 years of experience in education as well as working within the community extensively as a volunteer. Mr previous roles have included being a Chair of Governors, Volunteer and Ambassador for Rochdale, EiC (Excellence in cities)/Learning Mentor and a volunteer with the Manchester Hospitality Scheme. In my spare time I enjoy working on restoring cars and visiting car shows and volunteering within the community.”

I am a veterinary surgeon and have lived in Wardle for most of my life - I attended Wardle Academy myself (or Wardle High as it was then known!)I have two young daughters currently at St. Andrew’s and am incredibly impressed by the ethos of the school, I feel it is such a safe, happy and welcoming environment for pupils and parents alike.
