Design and Technology at St Andrew’s CE Primary School is the chance for all children to work collaboratively and creatively in order to design, make and evaluate a product. The children explore and analyse existing products before using this information to design and make their own product, using an iterative process throughout, where they constantly have the opportunity to look back on their design and edit it as they see fit. The children gain the confidence and skills to select and use their own materials and tools to reach their desired outcome, enhancing their technical knowledge in a range of contexts, including the key areas of structures, mechanisms, cooking and textiles.
The long term plan has been carefully created so that it is relevant to the needs of the individual children at St Andrew’s, that the skills are progressive and transferable and that there are relevant links across other curriculum subjects, with issues like sustainability and the use of ever changing technology always at the forefront.
The aim is for children to feel inspired by DT as a subject and to not only gain transferable skills to help them in general life, but to see the different areas within DT as a viable career path. Each year group studies an inspirational person within a relevant industry to give them insight into the wide range of backgrounds successful people can come from, how they got there and the skills and qualifications they needed to do so.
