Music

At St Andrew’s, our children are inspired and curious to learn about the music. We aim to provide children with a high-quality education in Music, which develops their appraising, historical knowledge, composing and performing skills. They will consistently be given opportunities to be critical and creative within music in order to develop their skills as young musicians. We want our children to appreciate music as a reflective resource; to help them to use music as a tool to regulate moods and emotions. We want Music to be memorable, engaging and inspiring.

Music Development Plan

Our Music Curriculum

Through our progressive Music curriculum, the children at St Andrew’s Primary School will have developed a love of music, which includes appraisal, composing and performing. Their skills will have progressed in order to have made good progress against the National Curriculum objectives. As well as this, they will have had the opportunities to participate in a range of wider opportunities for music.
The Charanga scheme of work is designed to incorporate an age appropriate, progressive sequence of skills into its lessons. Therefore, if the children in a particular year group are able to access the lessons, they are achieving an age appropriate standard of Music.
Music has also been seen to have had a positive impact on childrens’ well-being and the activities they have participated in should have had a positive impact on their mental health. As a school, we continually seek out ways to improve our teaching of music by taking part in and using recent research.

As part of the our Music curriculum, specialist teachers from Rochdale Music Service visit St Andrew’s to deliver ukulele and string lessons to our Year 1, 3 and 5s.

St Andrew’s Brass Band

Every child from Year 4 upwards has the opportunity to join St Andrew’s famous brass band. The children receive weekly lessons from specialist teachers from Wardle Academy and take part in numerous performances across the school year, including Rochdale Music Festival.
