Maths

At St Andrew’s, our intent for mathematics is to teach an ambitious, rich, balanced and progressive curriculum using Maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding in each area. We adopt a Mastery approach to learning where all children, including disadvantaged and pupils with SEND, have access to a full curriculum.

At St. Andrew’s, we proactively promote positive, “can do” attitudes and have high expectations and aspirations for all so that children develop confidence and a love of Maths. Children are encouraged to believe in themselves as mathematicians and to become “Persevering Penguins” when faced with mathematical challenges.

Children are not placed into ability groups and will work with a variety of partners to widen their opportunities for exploration, discussion and sharing their understanding with others. There is also an expectation that children take ownership of their learning, deciding on their level of understanding and then choosing an appropriate level of tasks.

Our Maths curriculum allows children to make sense of the world around them by giving them regular and planned opportunities to relate their learning to real life situations and everyday life. Where appropriate, mathematical knowledge and skills are also applied to other areas of the curriculum. Using Maths to become a good citizen is promoted through our Maths Happiness Month: children are given the opportunity to create a product or service in order to generate a profit. Money raised is then invested back into our local community.

Children at St. Andrew’s achieve extremely well in Maths. This is reflected in our end of Key Stage data: by the time our children leave us, their progress and attainment is significantly above National.
